Novels and Movies

I am shocked to read and watch the controversy surrounding the credits of "3 idiots" . Chetan Bhagat writes about the pain he is going through in his blog. The moview blog Naachgana even goes to the extent of providing the contarct between the producer and the writer.

Please read all the above three links to make your own views about the Hindi film industry.

Now look at this poster:

This is a poster of 80s Kannada film "Benkiya Bale". Just beneath the movie title, it is written "Based on Ta Raa Su's novel". The movie sticks to the plot of the novel, but takes enough commercial cinematic liberties

Look at this poster:

This is the poster of Girish Kasaravalli's "Dweepa". There is name of Naa.D'Souza in the main poster, although the director takes artistic liberties to even change plot of the story.

Look at this title:

The cerdit to the writer is given immediately next to the movie title.

Look at this 3 Idiots's poster now:

Its only the name of procuder and director. There is no way mention of "chetan Bhagat".

                                  -------------------000000-----------------

Hindi film industry has a very weak history of making movies based on novels. Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, Ram Gopal Verma, and all other major film producers and directors of Hindi film industry depend largely on their own stories (which are of course heavlily stolen from Hollywood moviews) or from their network of so-called writers. They simpy do not know how to acknowledge the novelist. At least they have copied this style from Hollywood (which they copy all the time) or from South Indian film history. In Kannada, if a movie is based ona novel, that will be a mojor part of publicity. Here what I am seeing is exactly opposite! Shame on you Hindi film industry!

Great post, this has always been Bollywod democratic way, to cheat writers. If Chetan Bhagat is facing this..imagine the plight of the rest.

It seems Bhagath has been paid Rs.1lakh or so for the story. Still why he has not been given due credit is a mystery..
